Dunes of Zoutelande - Nature

The high dunes of Zoutelande and Valkenisse rank among the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Zeeland. This iconic dune ridge forms part of the Walcheren coast, where nature, views and history blend seamlessly together.
Why are the high dunes of Zoutelande so special?
- Highest dunes in Zeeland: The dunes rise up to 54 metres above sea level, making them the highest in Zeeland and the second-highest in the Netherlands. Only the Schoorl dunes in Noord-Holland are taller.
- Zeeland Riviera: The south-facing beaches enjoy extra sunshine hours. On summer days it feels almost Mediterranean here – hence the nickname “Zeeland Riviera”.
- Panoramic Views: From the dune tops you can look out over the Westerschelde, the Walcheren countryside and the Zeeland coast. Large sea vessels sail remarkably close to the shore – a unique sight in the Netherlands.
- Walking & Cycling: The area is ideal for nature lovers, with winding walking trails over the dunes and scenic cycle paths at their base.
- Rich Nature: You can often spot rabbits, a wide variety of birds and occasionally even a deer.
- Beach Access: At Valkenisse, long stairways lead directly from the dunes to the quiet, wide beach.
- History in the Dunes: During the Second World War, this area formed part of the Atlantic Wall. Bunkers and lookout posts remain hidden among the dunes to this day.
These high dunes, together with the Kaapduinen near Dishoek and the Westduin near Vlissingen, form one of the most diverse nature areas in Zeeland: a blend of sun, beach, nature, viewpoints and impressive history.
