Zeeland Museum
The Zeeuws Museum is the provincial museum of Zeeland, housed in the medieval abbey of Middelburg. It shows art, history, traditional costume and curiosities from the province, from the Golden Age to today.
What can you expect at the Zeeuws Museum?
- History: The collection goes back to the Zeeuwsch Genootschap der Wetenschappen, founded in 1769. Part of it was lost in the bombing of 17 May 1940. The museum has been in the abbey since 1972 and reopened in 2007 after an eight-year rebuild, with a new entrance on the Abdijplein.
- Displays: The Dit is Zeeland display shows work by Jan Toorop and Piet Mondriaan, among others. The Wonder Rooms are full of curiosities, and there is also a costume hall and a room about the flood.
- Temporary: The exhibition DARN too runs until 26 September 2027.
- Highlights: Highlights of the Zeeuws Museum are:
- The Zeeland Tapestries (1593 to 1604), six tapestries showing sea battles of the Eighty Years' War.
- The Egyptian mummy of a girl aged about eight.
- The baby orca that washed ashore near Domburg in 1783.
- The portrait of Michiel de Ruyter in the Golden Age room.
- The wall of white Zeeland lace caps in the costume collection.
