Hedge Area Arnemuiden - Nature
The Hedge Area Arnemuiden is a hidden gem in Zeeland. This small nature reserve of about 4 hectares lets you experience a piece of authentic Zeeland cultural landscape, as Walcheren looked before 1944.
Why visit the Hedge Area Arnemuiden?
- Authentic cultural landscape: Walk through small meadows surrounded by flowering hedgerows, intersected by narrow ditches and centuries-old field patterns.
- Fairy-tale in spring: In April and May, the hawthorn hedges are in full bloom, turning the area into a sea of white blossoms.
- Cultural history visible in the landscape: The uneven microrelief of the terrain was formed by historical peat extraction (known as “moerneren”), a typically Zeeland phenomenon.
- Rich flora and fauna: The hedges consist of species such as hawthorn, blackthorn, elder and the typically Zeeland cowberry bramble. Bird enthusiasts will also enjoy spotting greenfinches, tree sparrows, linnets, wrens, chiffchaffs and even the rare turtle dove.
- An area full of contrasts: From the Blikkendijk you have a good view of the area. The contrast is striking:
- On the west side: the small-scale, historic hedgerow landscape.
- On the east side: the modern and orderly polder landscape of the Oranjepolder (reclaimed in 1618).
Practical information
- Location: North of Arnemuiden, at the corner of Oranjepolderseweg and Blikkendijk.
- Freely accessible walking area: The hedge area is open to visitors, and with all its hedges it sometimes feels like walking through a green maze.
- Parking: Parking is available along the verge of the Blikkendijk. The entrance is just around the corner on the Oranjepolderseweg.
